Love is Vodka [Book Review]

Title of the book - Love is Vodka... One sip ain't enough
Author – Amit Shankar
Publisher – Vitasta Publishing (2013)
Price – Rs 195/-

Don't judge the book by its cover, but judge this book by its back cover (That's what I did). Here's what it says:
Being a love child, Moon is anything but a conventional teen. With a leading news anchor as her mother, an aspiring entrepreneur as her boyfriends, the word LOVE baffles her. The whole idea of having one partner and love being eternal intrigues her.
Life turns upside down when she falls for her mother's boyfriend. Destiny further complicates things by blessing her with a mega modelling assignment and turning her famous overnight. A war between her head and heart exposes her to various hues of love
Will she decipher the true meaning of love? Embark on an exhilarating rendezvous with Moon and discover love like never before.

A nice cover design, catchy title and an almost nice back cover summary made me read the book. Let's get into it:
The book starts with the author deciphering the word - LOVE. Asking us (the readers) what is true love, does it exists? If it does, will it last a lifetime? Did it for you? What the author also says is - Live for the moment. Don't think about whether it will last or not. Cherish each moment. Enjoy the love you have now.

To begin with, I loved the name of the Protagonist in this book - Moon. The character is very Moon lovechild of the famous senior editor of news channel Payal Malik and a French diplomat father. Moon is a crazy and confused teenager working as an intern in one of the best advertisement agency. She is just like any other teenager; bored of her BF Ash, not believing in the concept of sticking to one for your whole life and struggling in her relationship with her mother. She always feels that her mother never really accepted her and got her in this life to SHOW the world that she is an independent woman.

Moon starts taking interest in her office colleague - Akash, who with his charismatic charm and poetic language steals moon’s heart. They start spending a lot of time together in the city, roaming, eating exploring it. Until one day when Moon sees him in a gay party with his boy friend. Moon feels betrayed and being lied to. Aakash never comes back to explain anything to her. A heartbroken Moon gets attracted to her Mother’s boyfriend “D”. D is not just her mom's boyfriend but also the boss of the advertising agency Moon is interning in. He suggests Moon for a modelling assignment and makes her a star overnight, grabs her attention with his charm and smile and Moon falls for him.

Through all the happy times and the upheavals, her constant companion is Danzka, her favourite brand of vodka that not only gives her the courage to take recklessly flirtatious decisions, but also helps her gulp down the ensuing sadness after the many failed affairs. And it eventually takes many a powerful gulps of Danzka for Moon to discover true love, in most unlikely of places, in most unlikely of circumstances.

Moon has a sweet relationship with her biological father who has always kept in touch with her via phone calls and expensive gifts for her.

Moon has an online buddy Nikhil, who is actually in love with her charming nature.

Moon is not stable. She keeps falling in and out of love easily. She is confused. What does true love actually means? Does it even exists?

The book ends at good note where she finds her true calling, finds her true love and finally gets closer to her mother.

The things I liked about this book -
1. The way author has portrayed the power of women; their decision making and power to confront the society. The role of Payal Malik is strong and shows the present women who doesn't fear anyone, has self-respect and the power to achieve ambitions. Author being a male has done a good job in portraying female character with all her emotion and complex feelings.
2. Comparison between vodka and love is quite interesting and has been portrayed a lot of times in this book.
3. The chapter titles - Life is too short. Be different, be weird; The best things happen when least expected; You were born an original, don't die a copy AND Don't be where you are tolerated, Be where you are celebrated, etc.
4. Love is Vodka is the very real and relatable way it has been put together. The use of modern

Certain lines I liked from book -
1. If love is all about freedom and honest expression then how can one associate it with loyalty?
2. If it is meant to last, it will, and if not.. well.. Cupid shall find you again

If you would ask me, I believe that True love does exists. There is someone for everyone :)

My Rating – 3.5/5

The read is crisp and really short. I finished the book in 6 hours but as always took me a lot of time to review.

The Mud Rush is Back - Monsoon Edition – August 31st 2013

The Mud Rush is proud to host the team ‘MS Warriors’ who will participate with their patients, caregivers, volunteers and well wishers along with their Cause Ambassador, MILIND SOMAN.

What happened last year? - A Recap of The Mud Rush at Kolad (9th Feb 2013)

Preview: The Mud Rush (TMR) at Kolad was an all-terrain marathon style run that stretched across a 7km circuit with challenging obstacles designed by the Indian Special Forces. This event encompassed 30-foot stacks of hay, water bodies, barrier walls, 100 feet stretches of tires, 45 degree hills, fire, ice, and, of course, a whole lot of mud. The fun didn’t stop here, making sure this event doesn’t end at the finish line. After the rush was over, the day had just begun. Once completed the run, participants or official Mud Rushers got ready to wine, dine and celebrate their accomplishments of the day. The Mud Rush recreational area featured an assortment of cover bands playing great music along with a wide array of food and beverages.

26 August 2013

My memories are just a smell away :)

Weird heading? Not so weird actually.
When the first drop of rain splashes on your garden or a nearby ground, the smell of wet soil enthralls your soul. Its like that perfect moment in a not-so-perfect life, its like that moment where life takes a back seat and its just you and the smell of the wet soil, its that moment which takes you to a time, a memory...

Isn't that some fragrances/smell reminds you of a place or someone? A scent that takes you back to a pleasurable time or experience?

Let me reminisce, I was 16, it was december. I was at my grandmother's place back in Lucknow. I recall leaning on the front door, looking out, watching people pass by... a sudden urge of going back in this time wakes me up. I am at my home. My mother is setting up the box of warm clothes. We don't really use them here in mumbai but have got a box full of colorful sweaters and quilt. Most of them woven by my Granny. Everytime my mother opens that box which smells of wool and napthelene, it takes me back to those times when I would run to my granny's laps. Her stories would make me smile, cry and sleep. The food made by her would make my winter vacations splendid. I miss her.

The other day my maid was cleaning the house. My mom asked her to clean it with dettol and water. The smell of Dettol struck me hard. It took me to the time when I was all of 6 years old. I was going to my school (1st std.). And suddenly the bell rang. I was late. I started running. I fall down. My sister came up to me. She held my hand, made me stand. Cleaned the dust on my knee, it was bleeding. She took out her new handkerchief, tied it round my knee. I cried. When I reached home, my mom took it out with dettol and warm water. I can still feel the pain but I can still feel the love and those tears I could feel in my sister's eyes for me that day... Memories truly make you what you are today...

My brother is in new class now. He got some new notebooks home. Ever smelled the new books? The blank papers and the fresh ink smells divine. I miss my school days. Those Days When 'Broken Toys' Were Better Than 'Broken Hearts... </3 The smell pf Pencil shavings... lost in an adolescence full of plastic and ink...

Sense of smell has a profound effect on us. Smell/Scents that reminds you of growing up, of home, of family...

I was on a call few days back, sitting on the window of my room...wind splashing on my face, drizzling outside. It smelled of oil in a kadhai... smelled of chilly, coriander and besan... I knew what my mother is making in the kitchen that sunday  morning... Garma Garam Pakode :) We love it! Served with green coriander chutney and your stomach is happy, so is your eyes. The smell of oil on the gas, brewing with pakode makes me think about those childhood days when every holiday was about family and relatives. Eating breakfast during holidays like its a festival everyday...

This morning I was standing in my balcony. It smelled of Mogra. I have a Mogra plant and it smells divine. It always takes me back to those days in Goa when I would make a gajra for my mother every morning during early monsoons. That's when Mogra grows the best with a huge crowd of flowers in its bush. She used to be happy and I used to love spending those hours making the perfect garland for her perfect hair bun :)

Smell of Polish when I open the shoe closet. Remember those days when you would rush for school in the morning and would find your shoes polished? It was either you mother or father who did that for you a night before. Never thanked them for that before? Do that today, never too late :)

Be it smell of that coffee at home which reminds you of Monsoon and those nights before exam when mom would stay awake with you, be it smell of that sweets made at home which reminds you of those pocket full of Jalebis, be it the smell of roses which takes you back to those amazing college days or be it the smell of petrol which would remind you of those endless long drives and holidays with family - smells/scent/fragrances actually makes a lot of memories!

The best scent ever? Smell of your home; of your parents :) When after a long day at work you knock the door and step inside, the mere fact that you smell home makes you let go off all your tiredness and weakness. A monotonous life suddenly turns to a life with hope, a life which is full of nostalgic memories and a life which holds a beautiful present :)

Do share in comments about the smell at home reminds you of something :)

For that someone in your life :)

I am in love with these lines <3

“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

Mia by Tanishq - "As beautiful as your work"

I am strong! I am Invincible! I am woman!

The day I listened to this song for the first time I could feel the strength a woman inherits within her. Be it your mother, daughter, sister, teacher, friend, acquaintance or any family member; it’s the woman who sets the world right. Nothing can bend her or break her. A woman of substance; her dedication, determination keeps her going.

My childhood, she made it priceless :)
The spark of the diamond increases when she wears it. The woman I met 22 years back, the day I was born. She smiled when I smiled; she made the world upside down if I frowned.

Mother on her wedding day :)
My mother is that Mia woman to me. Right from getting up in the morning to sleeping after checking up on all of us; family is her life. It is all what she has always worked or prayed for.  My mother has taken care of the family like god takes care of all of us. It’s true when they say; God couldn't be on earth with all of us that’s why he made mothers.

The bling you see in that diamond or gold; I see in my mother’s smile. The value of happiness and prosperity which my Mia woman has bestowed in our lives is not less than that of a diamond. Diamond is a girl’s best friend and to me my Mia woman is. Her work is worship for her. Our happiness is the satisfaction of her life.

Her work gives strength. She is happy when she sews something for us, writes articles in her diary, shows it to us and make us read. She sees her second-self when she writes - feels happy about the things she does on a daily basis other than making the world perfect for me, my siblings and dad :)

The woman who is as beautiful as her work. The strength of my home, the support to us, the love of our lives and the diamond whose shine never goes out of sight :)

The Mia by Tanishq, I could relate to the TVC the time I saw it J Its like bang on! What’s in a name? Exactly what’s in a woman. They say, they do, they don’t let the outer shine overshadow what’s shining inside them; the Mia Tanishq Woman who is “As Beautiful As her Work.”

Independence Day with a difference - Live to Ride || Ride for a Cause

15th August 2013, being a public holiday; many of us will get up late and a few will get up in a rush to attend the flag hosting in our societies, children would run to their schools to attend cultural activities but there would be some who will celebrate the 67th Independence Day with a difference; on a road trip exploring the places unseen and standing for a difference in the society.

This 15th August, a new bread of passionate youth who believes in "Live to Ride" is admant about doing something revolutionary and world changing. This group of youngsters from the to-be-launched bikers club of Mumbai- "Brown Sparks Bikers Club", aim to ride for a cause with the 6 core members between the age group of 20-25 years; Gaurav - Head - video log creator editor, Ritvik- navigator, Shrey- safety officer, Nikhil- technical head, Siddhart- coordinator and Shonit- social coordinator and 8 other members from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. The club stands on the brick which says - "Live to Ride, Ride for a Cause".

On 15th Aug 2013 BSBC kick starts with its first cause, "Ride for kids smile". The group will ride from Aamchi Mumbai to Mukhne village (Ratnagiri District), leaving at 7am in morning -  carrying footballs, snacks, books and crayons... sounds different? All this to free the village children from the agony - life has brought them.

Anyone with a passion to ride and belief in bringing the changing from within can join the BSBC Group on their first ride for a cause. A biker at heart who feels that a change needs to start somewhere is more then welcomed. No biker without helmet, proper jacket, shoes, full pants, license and important bike papers would be allowed to continue the ride with the club members.

To the Wom'e'n I Love :)

Who said love happens just once? Love happens so many times. First with parents, siblings, friends, that special someone, more friends and so on... Its a feeling which never sets in, love is forever.

This post is dedicated to the love(s) of my life; the Wom'e'n I Love <3

Behind every girl is another girl with whom she not just shares her wardrobe, endless gossips, relationship talks but shares a bond of a sister; a sister she never had :)

"We all have that one friend, who is totally opposite to us."

That one friends in my life is - Ramani. We have had our share of night stays, birthday parties, hanging out, silly pictures, frowning upon and supporting each other in all times. If she hates someone, I hate him/her too, its like automatic and we never really wanna know the reason why.

"People who are closest to you know exactly how you feel when you give them that look!"

To me that friend is - Shikha Malwe. She knows me right through me. A simple girl who asks nothing from life but happiness for her family and loved ones. She is that 4am friend who would message a 10-message space long text the next morning just to say sorry. Yeah that's Shikha, she might get senti and emo at times but she is a sweetheart! :*

Not that I would indulge in this but I know If I may, she'll be there for that, to accompany me.
"When something awful happens and you need to get drunk, there will be one friend who would totally support it."

To me that friend is - Kenali Mehta.
This girl by the way, is totally pissed off on me for not meeting her and going out since a really long time considering that both of us were inseparable in our 3rd year of college! But she knows I am there for her no matter what :) I bumped into her few days back and her smile made realise - some people never really change, they are there to meet you on the course of life... afterall, Life is about meeting the ones you love, halfway... :)

"When you are having an emotional turmoil and your friend is nowhere to be found, you WILL go insane."
Well I do, when Ruchika Mishra is nowhere to be found. I have had such times with her when I leave her a heartbreaking text or a sad message and this girl doesn't reply for a week straight. But when she does, it makes me restore in my system - why I love her :D

She is a friend since 9 years, the day we were in 8th std. I remember I found a friend in her when we would spend our times in Music room rehearsing for regional level dance or song competitions. We both hate Maths :P and we both Love Harry Potter! #sigh
I remember those afternoons spent in cyber cafe to read about harry potter and endless plannings to write him a fan mail, we never did though.

"When you need an ego boost, she will pour you wine and tell you you're pretty."
In my case, the girl I am talking about here won't take me for wine but would be more than glad to offer me her Dilli ke Gol Gappe and Chole Kulche :D
Say Hi to my Dilli wali GF - Shivani Goyal B-)

I remember those weekends walking and shopping and eating and talking on delhi streets! deciding what to buy and what not to, coming back home and realising what I should have bought and didn't. And to that; Miss. Shivani saying," Oye koi baat nahi yaar! Kal fir chaliyo shopping!" ;) How much I miss her for this! <3

"When she would fix your problem and not you."

Foram and Unnati - love both of them! Foram is my honeybunch; our innumerable gtalk chats are a testimony to that! ;) Be it late night assignments or last minute exam preps, exchanging notes over chats or staying up late to help in each other's projects; we have had or share of helping out and letting the best foot forward for each other when one of us needed the other the most!

This post can never be complete without the 2 most important girls of my life - My Mother and my elder sister :)

If I ask, they'll be brutally true about where I stand in life. My critics, support and my life - these two women makes my world prettier with their beautiful heart :)
They wouldn't let the problems touch me but would dive in and take it out before the waves touch the shore. They would see right through me and I know when I am doing wrong and where I can improve. We often fight, but what's sea without a ship and what's love without a little disagreement? :)

Thanks to not just the women mentioned above but all those whose presence in my life has brought a difference :)
